Godly fathers must protect their families from the corrupting effects of sin by living lives of sobriety and watchfulness. What does it mean to live this kind of life?

A godly father that lives a life of sobriety and watchfulness aligned with God’s purposes for his people…

I. Lives according to God’s created order (Gen. 9:20-21).
     a. God’s order: ruled by God to rule creation.
     b. Sin’s distortion: ruled by creation rebelled against God.

II. Takes the generational effects of personal sins in the lives of his family seriously (Gen. 9:22-27).
     a. The generational snowball effects of sin: cursing.
     b. God’s plan for our legacy: Blessing.

III. Provides loving discipline that rewards virtue and punishes evil (Gen. 9:22-27).
     a. Choosing honor over shame: Shem and Japhet.
     b. Protecting our family from the corrupting effects of our sins: Call it out!

Provide Protective Discipline.

1. DISCIPLINE YOURSELF: Live a life that is worth imitating – sober and watchful not passive and slothful.
2. DISCIPLINE WITH PRINCIPLES: Leave a legacy that is worth passing on – blessing not cursing.
3. DISCIPLINE SPECIFIC BEHAVIORS: Give clear boundaries to your family according to God’s word.
