To be life-giving we must first be life-receiving. In God’s story all life originates in God. God created the world by his Word and it is his Word that sustains our lives and gives us a chance to choose life. Psalm 1 outlines the first steps of our journey. In God’s economy, choosing life begins with trusting and treasuring God’s word.

  1. We live in a world filled with lifestyles characterized by destructive choices.
    1. The way of the wicked, the sinner, and the scoffer Psalm 1:1.
    2. Their lifestyle and their end Psalm 1:4-5.
  2. God offers us direction in a world of confusion.
    1. Direction: the law of the Lord Psalm 1:2, Psalm 19.
    2. Our disposition: meditates– read, reflect, respond and rest- REMAIN cf. John 8:31-32.
  3. With his direction God also offers his provision Psalm 1:3
    1. God’s desire: Fruitfulness through faithfulness Psalm 1:3.
    2. The assurance of those who trust in God’s word: God knows their way Psalm 1:6.

To choose life-Trust and treasure God’s word.

Comfort food. We all have a meal or two we go to when we need to be cheered up. The trauma the first disciples experienced after the Passover meal was almost unbearable. How could they move on? Thank God for the resurrection! The new day of the resurrection assures us death is not the end. A death sentenced criminal last meal is a grace given before the end. This was a meal meant to offer freedom and the joy of a new beginning. The host himself offered forgiveness and abundant life in God’s kingdom and yet, this meal became his last anticipating his imminent death. Paradoxically a gracious life-giving, liberating meal marked Jesus as someone who was born to die as a criminal but was innocent as a lamb. Jesus’s last supper is an invitation to trade places where he offers his life for our death and where we surrender our life for his glory.…
