The Final Show Down | Numbers 22-24

Numbers 22-24 reveals the battle God must confront to equip his people to raise the next generation of believers who will inherit his promises. To do this, God must fight a battle in two fronts. First, on the microcosms of his relationships with his people, God must equip, organize and confront their sins. On a macrocosm, God must confront the spiritual forces that seek to break havoc and derail his plan. In both fronts, God’s people may rest assure that he will faithfully fight to make sure his will prevails in spite of the oppositions within his people’s hearts and outside in the spiritual realm.

How should God’s people react to the threats of God’s enemy?

When the powers of darkness rise against God’s plans, his people can stand firm, trusting…

  1. The unassailable power of his word: Yahweh’s word cannot be manipulated. He is able to overcome and outmaneuver the forces of evil on their own turf – overcoming evil with good (Numbers 22).
    1. War of the words: sorcery and divination vs. divine revelation (22:1-21).
    2. The heart behind the words: Curses and blessings (22:22-41).
    3. The error of Balaam (Jude 11, 2 Peter 2:14-15).
  2. The unavoidable power of his word: Yahweh’s word will prevail. He is able to decisively proclaim and execute his judgement over his spiritual enemies – blessing that overturns the curse of sin and death (Numbers 23-24).
    1. Judgment of the powers and their allies: Four oracles proclaiming God’s ultimate judgment over his enemies (ch. 23-24).
    2. Soft spots in the armor: the teachings of Balaam (Numbers 31:16, Revelation 2:14).

Only God can turn opposition into opportunity and curses into blessings. Stand firm trusting in his word.

  1. We live in a culture where the occult and superstition seek to distract people from the life-giving message of God’s word. Your witness is essential to dispel the lies of the enemy. Share God’s word with someone today and watch what only God can do (2 Cor. 10:4-5).
  2. Even though true believers in Jesus are beyond the grasp of the enemy (1 John 5:18), Satan still attacks the church by introducing heresy and tempting us to sin. Watchful and confident reliance on God’s word in the context of church accountability allows us to experience his victory in our daily walk and makes us effective instruments in God’s hands.

Meals as Enacted Promise | Luke 24

Comfort food. We all have a meal or two we go to when we need to be cheered up. The trauma the first disciples experienced after the Passover meal was almost unbearable. How could they move on? Thank God for the resurrection! The new day of the resurrection assures us death is not the end. A new day is coming where death will be no more and where, non surprisingly, Jesus will meet us a the table again with the ultimate comfort food anticipating the Kingdom to come.

Meals as Enacted Salvation | Luke 22

A death sentenced criminal last meal is a grace given before the end. This was a meal meant to offer freedom and the joy of a new beginning. The host himself offered forgiveness and abundant life in God’s kingdom and yet, this meal became his last anticipating his imminent death. Paradoxically a gracious life-giving, liberating meal marked Jesus as someone who was born to die as a criminal but was innocent as a lamb. Jesus’s last supper is an invitation to trade places where he offers his life for our death and where we surrender our life for his glory.…
