God’s life-giving plan ordained for us a flourishing and fruitful existence through the exercise of our stewardship, the relationships in our community, and our capacity to participate in the beauty of God’s holiness. Nevertheless, humanity chooses idolatry, alienation, and death instead. Through sin, God’s provisions for humanity to choose life were rejected and instead, we chose death.

If God’s original plan for humanity was life-giving, why is it that we live in a world filled with brokenness, pain, and death?

Brokenness, pain, and death are the legacy of rebellious humanity that, choosing sin, traded…

  1. God’s life-giving stewardship for corrupting idolatry: Brokenness (corruption) Gen. 3:1-6.
    1. Process: temptation leading to sin (cf. James 1:13-15).
    2. Fruit of idolatry: brokenness.
  2. God’ life-giving community for alienating pride: Fear, shame, blame, guilt, and pain Gen. 3:7-13.
    1. Process: sin leading to alienating self-centeredness.
    2. Fruit of pride: Fear, shame, blame, guilt, and pain.
  3. God’s life-giving Word for death: physical and spiritual death Genesis 3:14-19.
    1. Process: self-centeredness leading to death.
    2. Fruit of death: corruption and separation.

To choose life, we must first realize that on our own, we deserve nothing but death, and turn to the One who is life.

  1. What desires and cravings pull you away from God and invite you to replace his Word with substitute idols?
  2. How are your relationships with those closest to you? Are you trapped in a vicious cycle of pride, captive to fear, shame, blame, guilt, and pain? If any of these aspects constantly characterize your interaction with others, chances are there is pride and sin involved. Ask the Lord to show you where sin is hurting your relationships, then read James 5:16 to begin to take a first step in the right direction.
  3. Would you be prepared to meet your Creator if you were to die today? Death is an inevitable reality God wants us to prepare for. If you have questions this talk to a minister or team member in the care center to help you explore the hope of God’s gift of life.
