Feasting and Fasting
It is not surprising that the incarnational ministry of the word of God is critical for our spiritual maturity. At the beginning of his ministry, Jesus modeled for us what true spiritual maturity in dependence to God’s word is all about. If being spiritually mature is to be conformed into the likeness of Jesus Christ, then spiritual maturity is all about becoming living examples of God’s living Word. After all, John describes Jesus’ life and ministry saying “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us” John 1:14. The incarnate Christ continues to make his glory dwell in us as we live His Word. In 1 Peter 2:2, the apostle Peter encouraged believers to grow in maturity by eagerly feeding on God’s word. Spiritual nourishment in the word is the foundation of Christian growth and maturity. To be properly spiritually nourished, believers must feast on God’s word and fast from the world. In this sermon series we will reflect on these two crucial aspects in Jesus’ life at the beginning of his ministry in Matthew chapters 3 and 4.
