Meals as Enacted Mission | Luke 14

You are invited but unfortunately you must decline for you are already committed elsewhere. In our overly busy world, God is calling us, inviting us to join him in the most audacious adventure, the most anticipated event of history, the utmost gathering of anyone who is somebody in the universe and giving us the freedom to bring as many as we wish and yet, we are too busy to come. The banquet will still take place but who makes it to it will be quite a surprise, are you available to come or will you be left out?

What are we here for?

Followers of Jesus are set apart to receive and share God’s sanctifying grace, sent to an unhospitable world with an invitation to be part of God’s holy, healing, humble and hospitable family.

I. The heart of Christ’s set apart community and mission (Luke 14:1-24).
     a. Holy: The Sabbath of God (14:1).
     b. Healing: God’s gift anticipating his future Kingdom (14:1-6).
     c. Humble: The nature of God’s gracious upside-down Kingdom (not for the self-important and self-righteous) 14:7-11.
     d. Hospitable generosity: Inviting all people to join Jesus Christ (14:12-24).
AP. – Do our present priorities mirror God’s glorious future? Spend your life in God’s eternally valuable priorities.

II. His Call: High expectations – in the world but not of it (Luke 9:10-27).
     a. The cost of discipleship (14:25-33).
     b. What kind of salt are we? (14:34-35).
AP. – Jesus’ grace is free but costly. Just as his call. Because he will give it all, he rightly demands it all. Give it all to Jesus.

We are here to be a missionally hospitable community
not simply welcoming the likeable,
but inviting those whom God loves,
even when they do not want to come yet.

1. What is DFBC here for and why are we at DFBC? DFBC has been placed in this community to invite others to join Jesus Christ in a life-long, life-changing, and life-giving journey. How is this mission accomplished in ways that reflect the heart of a holy, healing, humble, and hospitable church? How is God calling you to contribute to this?
2. Grace is freely given and freely received but it is not cheap grace. Grace is costly and because it gives it all, it also demands it all. If you have received God’s grace, God also calls us to give out of his grace (Matt 10:8). Are you a life-giver or just a life-receiver?

Meals as Enacted Promise | Luke 24

Comfort food. We all have a meal or two we go to when we need to be cheered up. The trauma the first disciples experienced after the Passover meal was almost unbearable. How could they move on? Thank God for the resurrection! The new day of the resurrection assures us death is not the end. A new day is coming where death will be no more and where, non surprisingly, Jesus will meet us a the table again with the ultimate comfort food anticipating the Kingdom to come.

Meals as Enacted Salvation | Luke 22

A death sentenced criminal last meal is a grace given before the end. This was a meal meant to offer freedom and the joy of a new beginning. The host himself offered forgiveness and abundant life in God’s kingdom and yet, this meal became his last anticipating his imminent death. Paradoxically a gracious life-giving, liberating meal marked Jesus as someone who was born to die as a criminal but was innocent as a lamb. Jesus’s last supper is an invitation to trade places where he offers his life for our death and where we surrender our life for his glory.…
