Christ’s Sufficiency | John 1

In a world of scarcity, God gives us Christ’s sufficiency. Christ is the Word of life who became flesh, Creator, Sustainer, Life, Light, Victor and the One who gives us the right to become children of God. He is greater than Moses and the law itself for he is its fulfillment and who brought us the humanly impossible gift of God’s grace.

Why does the sufficiency of Christ in his incarnation liberate us from an economy of scarcity and greed to the life-giving reality of God’s glorious generosity?

The sufficiency of Christ in his incarnation liberates us from the slavery of the scarcity mentality of this world to God’s glorious and gracious generosity because…

I. Through his incarnation, Jesus redefined what truly matters: value – our worth before our work (John 1:1-5).

     a. Relational over transactional economy.
     b. Being before doing.

II. Through his incarnation, Jesus made a way to access God’s resources for those who previously were deprived: opportunity (John 1:6-13).

     a. Battle of light vs. darkness.

     b. Generosity vs entitlement.

III. Through his incarnation, Jesus reoriented our hearts towards a lifestyle dependent on God’s gracious and glorious generosity, not our deficiency or scarcity: life-giving vs. life-taking (John 1:14-18).

Be generous with your life and resources,

for God graciously gives you both.

Don’t hoard what God’s grace gave you to share.

1. In God’s economy, the glory of God, flourishing of human relationships and good stewardship of his creation are the goals of wealth creation, not hoarding or greedy accumulation. How are you using your money to glorify God, bless others and manage his creation in a way that reflects his gracious generosity?

2. What are you doing to make sure your resources are shared in such a way that there is always room at your table for those who have less than you?

3. What else would God have to do for you to let go of your fear of scarcity and trust him to share generously? (cf. Luke 12:32-34, Rom 8:32).

Meals as Enacted Promise | Luke 24

Comfort food. We all have a meal or two we go to when we need to be cheered up. The trauma the first disciples experienced after the Passover meal was almost unbearable. How could they move on? Thank God for the resurrection! The new day of the resurrection assures us death is not the end. A new day is coming where death will be no more and where, non surprisingly, Jesus will meet us a the table again with the ultimate comfort food anticipating the Kingdom to come.

Meals as Enacted Salvation | Luke 22

A death sentenced criminal last meal is a grace given before the end. This was a meal meant to offer freedom and the joy of a new beginning. The host himself offered forgiveness and abundant life in God’s kingdom and yet, this meal became his last anticipating his imminent death. Paradoxically a gracious life-giving, liberating meal marked Jesus as someone who was born to die as a criminal but was innocent as a lamb. Jesus’s last supper is an invitation to trade places where he offers his life for our death and where we surrender our life for his glory.…
