Christmas Decluttering | 2 Cor 11:1-4

It may be the most wonderful time of the year but it is also the most cluttered one. In the many activities, gifts, advertisements and multiple agendas of the season, it is easy to forget the real reason for the season. In this passage, Paul reminds us of the dangers of being distracted from the supremacy, sufficiency, and simplicity of Jesus Christ and recalibrates us to fix our eyes on Christ, the Lord.

In a world of options clamoring for our devotion, where should believers focus their eyes to stay true to their God-given vocation?

In order to stay true to their God-given vocation, believers must be able to singularly focus their attention on…

I. The supremacy of Christ: zealous for the purity of our covenant commitment (first love) 2 Cor. 11:1-2.

II. The simplicity of Christ: our sincere and pure devotion to Christ (2 Cor. 11:3).

III. The sufficiency of Christ: no other Jesus, Spirit or gospel – back to the essentials (2 Cor. 11:4).

Christ is not a good option among many.

Either Christ is Lord of all and above all,

Or not at all.

1. How does the supremacy of Christ in our lives affect the way we celebrate Christmas?

2. How does the sufficiency of Christ confront the consumeristic tendencies of the season? Perhaps a way to experience more of Christ is to say no to the distractions of this world and focus on what truly matters in him.

3. There are many narratives that seek to replace Christ as the “reason for the season”, Christ may not be as entertaining as elves and red outfits but he is real, good, and true, not a fancy embellishment to make us feel better. Why don’t you give him a try and see why we call him Christ the Lord?
