It is time to move on. After long journey in the wilderness, it is finally time for the new generation of Israelites to take the next step to the promised land. Even though the journey has been difficult, their common experiences have shaped a new generation to embrace God’s story as theirs. The next generation after the Exodus became a generation shaped by the Word.

What stirs the Next Generation of God’s people to become faithful stewards of his legacy?

The Next Generation of God’s people become a community of faithful stewards of God’s legacy when…

  1. The previous generation allows them to learn from their mistakes and build on their successes: Experiencing God’s works in sacrificial giving (Deuteronomy 1:1-3:29).
    1. The mistakes of the past: mistrust and disobedience of God lead to disaster (1:1-2:1).
    2. Building on their success: trust and obedience lead to success (2:2-3:29).
  2. The new generation unreservedly and single-heartedly commits to obeying God’s word and worshiping him alone: Believing God’s words faithfully (Deuteronomy 4).
    1. Don’t add or subtract (4:1-4).
    2. Obey and see the effects of God’s word in your life: wisdom (4:5-8).
    3. Watch out for idolatry (4:9-31). d. Go for the real deal: serve and worship God alone (4:32-40).

Lord, make my way prosperous, not that I achieve a high station, but that my life may be an exhibit to the value of knowing God. – Jim Elliot

  1. How do you show your gratitude for the legacy of faith you have received? A life that seeks to leave a world better than the one we were given understands that our privileges come with responsibilities. As you journey through life, let God’s faithfulness in the past be the foundation of your faithfulness to him in the future.
  2. Whether you are in your last years of your journey or just beginning, God wants you to be a faithful steward of his resources. You may be the platform others will need to stand on or you may be called to take his legacy forward. Regardless, in God’s calling, obedience is worship. Are you ready to commit to his redemptive plan?

Meals as Enacted Promise | Luke 24

Comfort food. We all have a meal or two we go to when we need to be cheered up. The trauma the first disciples experienced after the Passover meal was almost unbearable. How could they move on? Thank God for the resurrection! The new day of the resurrection assures us death is not the end. A new day is coming where death will be no more and where, non surprisingly, Jesus will meet us a the table again with the ultimate comfort food anticipating the Kingdom to come.

Meals as Enacted Salvation | Luke 22

A death sentenced criminal last meal is a grace given before the end. This was a meal meant to offer freedom and the joy of a new beginning. The host himself offered forgiveness and abundant life in God’s kingdom and yet, this meal became his last anticipating his imminent death. Paradoxically a gracious life-giving, liberating meal marked Jesus as someone who was born to die as a criminal but was innocent as a lamb. Jesus’s last supper is an invitation to trade places where he offers his life for our death and where we surrender our life for his glory.…
