Anxious-less
In the United States, we live in an age of unprecedented technological and material prosperity. Even though we have plenty of food, climate controlled houses, smart devices, all sorts of medications, and body replacement spare parts, we seem to also be more anxious than ever. According to Barna, “well before the pandemic hit, Barna research—as well as others’—finds that young people, namely Millennials and Gen Z, are more likely than generations that came before to report battling with mental health issues. In research conducted for The Connected Generation, Barna’s largest-ever study, data show that half of U.S. 18–35-year-olds (49%) expressed anxiety over important decisions and were afraid to fail. Over three in 10 said they often felt sad or depressed (39%) or lonely and isolated from others (34%)”. In Matthew 6:19-34. Jesus addresses these critical mental health issues and connects them to one’s worldview. Jesus’ antidote to the fears and anxieties of this world is not based on becoming successful in this worldly system of values but counterintuitively live for a higher purpose under the providential rule and care of a good God. As we will see in this series, Jesus’ antidote to the world’s anxiety is the hope only the gospel can give to those who place their faith in the Lord. In this sermon series, we will explore Jesus’s antidote to worldly anxiety distilled into six principles for a hope-filled life.
